IN MEMORIAM – BROTHER ALFRED “ALFIE” RODRIGUEZ
It is with deep regret that we share the passing of Brother Alfred “Alfie” Rodriguez, retired Business Agent of SMART Local 265.
Brother Rodriguez devoted his working life to the Sheet Metal Workers union and remained active in leadership for decades. His career reflected a steady commitment to representing members and upholding the values of organized labor.
The family has provided a full obituary and service information, which we are sharing with the membership HERE. We are also including a brief overview of Brother Rodriguez’s years in the trade and in the union, especially for those who may not have known him personally.
Alfie entered the Sheet Metal Workers trade in 1970, beginning his apprenticeship with Local 50. Over time, he became deeply involved in union leadership and served in several roles, including President of Local 50 during the 1982 merger of Locals 50, 220, and 265. Following the merger, he continued serving on the Local 265 Executive Board.
In 1986, Alfie stepped into the role of Business Agent for Local 265, a position he held until his retirement in 2009. In that role, he worked closely with members and contractors on contracts, grievances, and jobsite concerns, always focused on protecting the membership.
Beyond the Local, Alfie was active in the broader labor movement. He served as an officer with the Will & Grundy County Building Trades Council and the Three Rivers Construction Alliance, supporting efforts to expand union construction and union jobs throughout the region. He was also involved in civic and political life, including many years of service as a precinct committeeman in Grundy County.
Brother Rodriguez will be remembered as a lifelong Sheet Metal Worker and union representative who dedicated his career to serving others and strengthening our labor movement.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege to work alongside him.
